How to Subscribe to J-Scouts | After you have Subscribed to J-Scouts

J-Scouts Mailing List Options

Remember that the listserver is only a machine and can only do what it's told. YOU need to remember to distinguish between the

LIST: j-scouts@shamash.org

where you will send messages to the other folks who subscribe to J-Scouts, and the

LISTSERVER: listproc@shamash.org

which handles the details about your subscription. The listserver handles many, many other lists, so when you communicate with it about J-Scouts, you have to remember to tell it you are talking about J-Scouts. Unless you want to know all of the lists it handles or the ones that you are subscribed to.

When sending a message to the list, be sure to include a short signature line at the bottom of the message. Sometimes, either through individual mail readers or more systemic means, the mail header is truncated so that other members of the list may not know who you are without your signature.

Here are the basic listserver commands you will need:

subscribe j-scouts <your name> to join J-Scouts
unsubscribe j-scouts to leave J-Scouts
set j-scouts address <password> <new address> to change where you will receive your mail
set j-scouts password <oldpassword> <newpassword> to change your password for the list
help to list every command available
lists to list all of the mailing lists at Shamash
which to list the mailing lists you subscribe to (at Shamash)
set j-scouts mail digest to receive a daily digest instead of each message as it is sent
set j-scouts mail postpone to hold your mail until you tell it to release it
set j-scouts mail ack to have the listserver send you a copy of each message you send
set j-scouts mail noack to tell the listserve not to send you a copy of your messages

The four mail options are mutually exclusive. To turn off digest, for example, you would send one of the other three messages. To hold your mail while you are off at camp, use the "set j-scouts mail postpone" option. To read all of the messages that have accumulated while you were away at camp, you would send a new message "set j-scouts mail noack", for example.

A Scout is courteous: if you are going to be away from your email account, please change your J-Scouts subscription to "set j-scouts mail postpone". Otherwise, the list owners will get several messages for EACH message that bounces because your mailbox is full. Also, if you have an automatic responder, do the same thing, or the entire list will receive your message for EACH message that you receive, including your automatic response. This tends to annoy the listowners, who may unsubscribe you from the list entirely.
