2010 NERJCOS CONFERENCE ANNOUNCED

The 23rd Annual NER JCoS Conference will be held on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at the Ner Tamid Synagogue, 6214 Pimlico Road, Baltimore, MD 21209. The fee is only $36 and includes all materials, a handsome patch, morning snack and a Kosher luncheon. This event is an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas with others who also want to increase Jewish participation in Scouting and we invite you and others from your committee to attend. REVIEW OF THE 2009 NERJCOS CONFERENCE

On March 22, 2009, Alpine Scout Camp served as the backdrop for the Northeast Region Jewish Committee on Scouting's (NERJCoS) 22nd Annual Conference. Just under 100 volunteer Scouters and Scout Professionals from over 25 councils of the Northeast Region were in attendance - 35% of the councils in the region. Attendees from Massachusetts to the District of Columbia and from the Jersey Shore to Pittsburgh shared best practices in Jewish Scouting. Materials from the 16 hours of plenary and break-out sessions are available on this website.

This year's conference had new seminars, course offerings and a diverse exhibitor and display area. The conference received financial and exhibit support from local vendors who offer useful programs to Scouts. Trails End Popcorn not only sponsored the morning breakfast and an exhibit table, but also made sure that all conference participants left with their great Trails End popcorn. A brand new course track was offered that was specifically designed for Council JCoS Chairs. We offered special sessions and activities for local Council JCoS Chairs as the plan is now to have the former NJCoS Local Chairs training done on a regional basis. Another brand new course track was offered that was specifically designed for Cub Scout Leaders on Jewish crafts, themes and holiday ideas (all age appropriate to Cubs).

The conference also received the support of both the NER and NJCoS who served as break-out session leaders, conference participants and speakers during the plenary sessions. In attendance were:

Northeast Region Director Gene Stone gave us a welcome and opening remarks Our keynote address was given by A.J. Kreimer on the past, present and future of Scouting under Jewish auspices.   Since 2005, we have seen 36 new units sponsored by Jewish entities formed in the Region.

Our D'var Torah was given by Rabbi Art Vernon who focused on the Pesach holiday to come. As they have for the past 15 years, Tzivos Hashem (Chabad-Lubavitch) also provided all conference participants with Shmurah Matzah to add to the meaning of each of our seder celebrations.

Special recognitions were also a major component of the plenary sessions. Eagle Scout Shawn Goldsmith of Troop 240, Sponsor- Riverdale Presbyterian Church, Greater New York Councils, Bronx River District, was also on hand to allow us to recognize his accomplishments including earning all 121 merit badges. Lastly, Scouters received the Northeast Region JCoS' Bronze, Gold and Silver Chai Awards recognizing their on-going support for Jewish Scouting.

We recognized and thanked Elliot Klugman for dedicated service as NERJCoS Conference Chairman from 2006 to 2009 and Rabbi Rachmiel Tobesman for serving as NERJCoS Program Chairman for 2007 to 2009. We also thanked conference host Northern NJ Council and their JCoS Chairman Daniel Chazin.

Next year's conference will be held in the Baltimore area on March 14, 2010 and will be led by Conference Chair Rabbi Rachmiel Tobesman and Program Chair Alan Grossman. Please hold the date and plan on joining us for some truly special surprises that are planned to keep this conference vital and of importance to all in work within the world of Jewish Scouting.

MULTI-COUNCIL JCOS EVENTS

Information about the 2010 New Jersey Kinusim is now available online on our website, www.njkinus.org.
The Boy Scout Kinus will be held on Memorial Day weekend, Friday, May 28th to Monday, May 31st.

The Cub Scout Kinus will be held on the following weekend, Friday, June 4th to Sunday, June 6th.
Both Kinusim will be held at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Blairstown, New Jersey.

Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and their families from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, Massachusetts and elsewhere are encouraged to attend. Delicious kosher meals, as well as a great program, will be provided. There will be both Traditional and Egalitarian services.

Northeast Region JCOS Announces Appointments

Northeast Region JCoS Chair Jeff Goldsmith has announced the appointment of Steve Woogmaster as the Area 1 Representative for the Northeast Region Jewish Committee on Scouting. Steve is a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, served as Scoutmaster at the 2005 National Jamboree for Old Colony Council in Massachusetts, and is the former Director of Personnel for Dunkin Donuts. Prior appointments include Alan Grossman as the NERJCoS Area 2 & Metros Representative, Arnie Rubenstein as the NERJCoS Area 3 & Metros Representative, Jay Rubin as the NERJCoS Area 4 & Metros Representative and Bruce Nelson as NERJCoS Webmaster.
